Reyes Horna Family from Finca La Colpa
The origin of the Reyes Horna family
The history of the Reyes Horna Family is intertwined with the mountains and valleys of Huaranchal, Otuzco, in the region of La Libertad, Peru. Don Claudio Reyes Romero, affectionately known as "El Jefe", and his wife Doña Nazaria Horna, whom they call "Nashita", are the heart of Finca La Colpa. At 68 years old, Don Claudio not only has a contagious smile and an inspiring spirit, but also a strength that has led his family to achieve great achievements in coffee cultivation.
The Reyes Horna Family's adventure in the world of specialty coffee began thanks to a happy coincidence. Carlitos, a roaster from Lima, got to know the farm and saw the potential of its coffee plantations, located in an area until then little known for its coffee. Through the Otuzco Project, Carlitos collaborated with the family, providing them with education and resources to improve their cultivation, selection, harvest and post-harvest processes.
In 2018, thanks to their discipline and constant learning, the family implemented specialty processes and raised the quality of their coffee, reaching a score of 85.75 points. This achievement made the Reyes Horna Family pioneers of specialty coffee in Huaranchal.
Processes and quality
Finca La Colpa is distinguished by its dedication to quality and innovation in coffee growing and processing processes. Located at an altitude of 2118 meters above sea level, the farm grows the Typica variety, known for its notes of caramel and chocolate. The coffee is processed naturally, highlighting the complex and balanced flavors that characterize its product.
The on-farm production process includes natural fermentation and sun drying, techniques that allow the coffee to develop its distinctive flavor profile. The family maintains strict quality control at every stage of the process, ensuring that each coffee bean meets the highest standards.
Certifications and social and environmental impact
Finca La Colpa is an example of sustainability and commitment to the community. Thanks to the profits obtained from the sale of specialty coffee, the family can reinvest in improving their processes and the quality of their production. Additionally, the Otuzco Project has allowed them to share their knowledge and resources with other local coffee growers, generating a positive impact on the regional economy.
The impact of the Reyes Horna Family goes beyond their farm. By investing in sustainable processes and sharing their success with neighboring producers, the family contributes to the economic and social development of the region. The farm promotes agricultural practices that respect the environment, using natural and organic methods that preserve soil health and local biodiversity.
Doña Nazaria, with her energy and self-confidence, is the official seller of the 'La Colpa' farmhouse, and plays a crucial role in the marketing of coffee. Their dedication and effort ensure that the quality of the coffee reaches consumers, while their presence in the community strengthens ties and promotes local development.
