Marín Family of the D'dago Farm
The origin of the Marín family
La Chacra D'dago is located 20 minutes from Villa Rica, in San Luis de Shuaro, Chanchamayo, Junín, Peru. This farm is the home of the Marín Arce Family, led by Dagoberto Marín, known for his deep connection with nature and his commitment to biodynamic agriculture. The passion for coffee and the land has been transmitted through three generations, making Chacra D'dago an example of dedication and sustainability.
The history of Chacra D'dago began in 2005, when Dagoberto Marín decided to change the focus of agriculture on his farm. Influenced by biodynamic agriculture, Dagoberto was looking for a way to farm that was fair, healthy and in harmony with nature. This decision marked a turning point, leading the family to adopt agricultural practices that regenerate the soil and protect the environment.
Dagoberto, along with his sons Hector, Cesar, Edu and Nelly, works tirelessly to maintain the integrity of the farm and continually improve the quality of their coffee. Family integration and love for nature are the pillars that support their daily work, creating a legacy that goes beyond coffee production.
Processes and quality
La Chacra D'dago stands out for its innovative cultivation and processing techniques. Using principles of biodynamic agriculture, the farm employs composting and understory care practices that capture CO2 and enrich biodiversity. The coffee trees are managed under diversified shade, which protects the crops and promotes healthy growth.
The production process includes a 24-hour fermentation, followed by drying in the sun and additional drying in guardiolas for two days. These techniques ensure that each coffee bean develops a unique and balanced flavor profile. The farm has also implemented the use of octagonal tanks for fermentation, an innovation that standardizes quality and improves the taste of the cup.
Biodynamic agriculture
Biodynamic agriculture is a holistic and ecological approach that treats the farm as a living, integrated and self-sufficient organism. This method is based on principles of organic farming, but goes a step further by considering natural rhythms, cosmic influences, and the use of biodynamic preparations to improve soil fertility and plant health. At the D'dago Farm, this means:
- Biodynamic Preparations: They use specific mixtures of herbs, minerals and manure that are applied to soil and compost to activate biological processes and improve fertility.
- Biodynamic Calendar: Planting, cultivation and harvesting are carried out following a calendar that takes into account the phases of the moon and planetary positions, optimizing the growth and quality of the plants.
- Soil Care: The farm focuses on maintaining living and healthy soil through crop rotation, the use of organic fertilizers and the conservation of biodiversity.
These methods not only benefit the environment, but also result in high-quality coffee. Biodiversity and soil health result in stronger, more resilient plants, producing coffee cherries with richer and more complex flavor profiles.
Organic and biodynamic certification
La Chacra D'dago is certified for its organic and biodynamic production, complying with Demeter certification standards. This ensures that all products are grown without the use of harmful chemicals and that agricultural practices respect and regenerate the environment.
Social and environmental impact
The impact of the D'dago Farm goes beyond the farm. In 2016, Dagoberto Marín started a program to work with neighboring producers interested in biodynamic agriculture. Today, many of these producers are certified organic and biodynamic, exporting their coffee to the German market. This project not only improves the quality of coffee in the region, but also provides education and resources to other coffee farmers, encouraging community development and sustainability.
The farm is committed to practices that protect the environment, using natural fertilizers and conserving native trees. Every purchase of their coffee helps maintain these sustainable practices and supports the well-being of local communities.
