Cortez Family

The origin of the Cortéz Family

Origins, heritage and dedication

The history of the Cortez Family is deeply rooted in the Imahuaca Population Center, in Cajamarca, Peru. David Cortez, the patriarch, was born and raised on the farm that belonged to his parents, growing coffee from a young age. Over time, his sons Edwin and Dilmer, after leaving to study, returned to the farm with the passion and desire to work specialty coffee, transforming Finca La Esmeralda into a benchmark of quality and dedication.

Achievements and passion for coffee

Edwin, one of the sons, has stood out notably in the world of barista. He is a two-time barista champion awarded at Expo Café Cajamarca in the 2022 and 2023 editions, in addition to having been National EBC runner-up in 2018. His skill and deep knowledge of coffee have allowed him to take the name of the farm to new heights.

Dilmer, also a barista, focuses on coffee experimentation in his laboratory. He runs a coffee shop in Jaén, Cajamarca, where he offers his innovations and creates unique experiences for coffee lovers. His dedication to the science of coffee and his innovative spirit perfectly complement the family legacy.

Work process on the farm

Finca La Esmeralda is located at 1,750 meters above sea level, in Imahuaca, four hours by car from the city of Jaén. Every day, the family travels the hour and a half that separates their house in the mountains from the land where they grow coffee. On the farm, they grow varieties such as geisha, caturra and yellow bourbon, and they are exploring new varieties such as Ethiopian.

Quality and varieties

The coffee from Finca La Esmeralda is known for its body and robustness. This coffee can be found in prominent specialty coffee shops in Lima, such as Puku Puku and Neira Café. The farm uses traditional and experimental methods to ensure that each coffee bean reflects the quality and care with which it is grown.

Social and environmental impact

The Cortez family is not only dedicated to the production of high-quality coffee, but is also committed to the sustainability and well-being of their community. They use responsible agricultural practices that promote soil health and biodiversity. Additionally, their growing and processing methods are designed to minimize environmental impact and improve the quality of life of workers and their families.

Certifications and sustainability

Although the farm does not yet have formal certifications, the dedication to sustainability is evident in every aspect of its operation. The family uses regenerative farming techniques and composting practices that contribute to soil health and environmental conservation.

Economic and community impact

The success of Finca La Esmeralda has had a positive impact on the local economy. It generates direct and indirect employment for many families in Imahuaca, improving their income and quality of life. Selling specialty coffee, which typically fetches higher prices in the market, allows the Cortez family to reinvest in the farm and in the education of future generations.
